I can just imagine the ridiculous discussion that would ensue here if 'Grateful Dead History Month' were ever a serious proposal. What month would that be?

This nonsense about the remaining members (core or nor) not living up to their legacy or receiving proper recognition is just that...nonsense. What recognition would be proper? And that word strikes me as wrong considering who this band was. Proper? The Grateful Dead? Me thinks not.

Nearest I can figger, having fans, regardless of when they started listening and whether or not they saw Jerry or Brent or Keith or Pigpen or an Acid Test or whatever, love the music and continue playing it and listening to it is all the recognition they really ever sought.

This is not a direct response to the comment just above.

Proper recognition would be having their catalog of music considered on par with The Beatles,The Carter Family,Coltrane musicians who made a contribution to their genre of music that was important. Not to be looked at as some sixties drug gobblers who pushed out Truckin' and Touch of Grey and amassed a bunch of hippies who followed them around.

Also maybe when it comes time to recognize their 50th anniversary maybe you don't trot out four 70 year olds to play under rehearsed shitty versions of their music with vocals so shamefully bad I can't understand how they had the balls to do it.

As for your figuring paragraph I don't understand what you are talking about since I made no mention of when people started listening or what version of the band they saw or if they saw the band at all.I also said nothing nonsensical or otherwise about anyone living up to their legacy.I leave the band members to speak for themselves as I have no idea what they sought from anything, but you obviously have some insight into the workings of their minds.

This is a response to mooding as Chris U post doesn't deserve a response.

Well they're taught in college. Isn't that good? Notice the article says "the latest school". Can't get your BA unless you know the Dead.

As far as the Farewell goes, I think they tried as best they could within the time element and age thing to respect their legacy. I got a feeling they didn't expect things to blow up like they did when they first started thinking about it. The people really wanted it. Lots of people. For one more chance to feel like it felt. Or something. But it tapped into something generationally big. And I couldn't deny them their emotional reward after all the great times they gave us even if I cringed a bunch of times. So on we go.

You made some good points on the Farewell shows and it did put them in an unenviable position. Its easy to be critical and not knowing their true feelings and thoughts on things maybe somewhat unfair, but those shows were awful.
